Early Life and Education

Whoopi Goldberg was born as Caryn Elaine Johnson on November 13, 1955, in New York City. Her parents were Robert James Johnson Jr. and Emma Johnson. Whoopi also has an older brother Clyde, with whom she grew up together in Chelsea-Elliot Houses.

Although, Goldberg’s mother is not alive at present, according to Goldberg she was a strong and wise woman. After Whoopi’s father abandoned their family, her mother involved herself in a variety of jobs to support her and her two kids.

Regarding her education, Goldberg went to a local Catholic School, St Columbia while she was young. Unfortunately, she had dyslexia: a disorder when an individual has trouble in reading despite normal intelligence and thus dropped out from high school Washington Irving High School while she was only 17 years of age.

As of now, we are already clear that the actress did not get her name Whoopi Goldberg since her birth. She chose her first name form Whoopee cushion. She said, “When you are performing on the stage, there is no time to go to the bathroom and close the door. So, you feel a little gassier; you need to let it go. This is why people used to call her a whoopee cushion. That’s where the name emerged.”

However, the last name Goldberg is a part of her family. She even considers it as a family heritage just like her being a black.

Whoopi began her career as a stand-up comedian before she developed a one-woman stage show The Spook Show. The Show as a hit for the humor, satire, and drama. Soon after, Goldberg made her debut in Hollywood through a movie The Color Purple in 1985.

To count some more movies she appears in are ‘Jumpin’, ‘Jack Flash,’ ‘Burglar,’ ‘Fatal Beuty,’ and ‘The Telephone.’  She continued her career with the films like ‘Soapdish,’ ‘The Player,’ ‘Sister Act,’ ‘Sarafina!’, ‘Made in America’ and the sequel ‘Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.’  She also appeared in ‘Star Trek’: The Next Generation.’
