Jennifer Garner rose to international prominence playing CIA agent Sydney Bristow on the television series Alias, which earned her four consecutive Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress in a Drama Series, winning one in 2002. for her performance in Alias Garner also won a Screen Actors Guild Award in 2005. During the show she simultaneously held minor roles in various films such as Pearl Harbor and Daredevil, The Kingdom and Dallas Buyers Club.

In November 2008, the Los Angeles court accepted Jennifer Garner's request for a restraining order against Steven Burky, a man obsessed with the actress and her family and who followed her around the country.

According to the court ruling, the man may not come within 100 paces of Jennifer Garner and her family for three years. On December 14, 2009 Burky violates this restraining order, and for this reason he is arrested and taken to court on December 15: the court sentences three years in prison for stalking together with the payment of $150,000 for moral damages. Burky, who was briefly hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital in 2008, said: "God sent me a vision, and I saw that Jennifer was being haunted by dark forces that would lead to her death."
