Barbie is a line of dolls marketed by Mattel starting on March 9, 1959 and focused on a young American woman. Barbie's full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts, born in Willows, Wisconsin. It is the best-selling doll in the world and the flagship element of its production house.
The best-selling product of the line was the Totally Hair Barbie, with hair that can be styled down to the doll's feet, released in 1992. Barbie was also the first toy to have a marketing strategy heavily based on television advertising, a strategy later taken up by others; for many years the commercials were characterized by the melody of Georgy Girl, a hit by the musical group The Seekers.
It is estimated that over a billion Barbies have been sold in at least 150 countries, and Mattel has stated that three Barbies are sold every second.
Barbie is also a 2023 film directed by Greta Gerwig. The film is the first live-action film adaptation of Mattel's popular Barbie fashion doll series, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
