TikTok is a Chinese video sharing platform launched on September 20, 2016, initially under the name musical.ly. Through the app, users can create short clips of variable length and possibly change the playback speed, add filters, special effects and sounds to their videos. In China the application is different than the one published in the West and is more developed, also integrating functions for Internet marketing.

Users can upload videos up to 10 minutes long after the latest update, and add songs, sounds or voices to dub. Musical.ly also allowed you to create shorter videos, called Live Moments, which are essentially animated GIFs with background music. Musical.ly also had an instant messaging feature between users called direct.ly.

The TikTok mobile application allows users to speed up, slow down or change the background sound or music using a filter, selectable from a wide range of musical genres. Using a dedicated option, you can record audio and video of your reaction while the clip is displayed on your smartphone, while the duo option allows you to share video footage from two mobile terminals in a single video. This functionality is used for example between two close people to film each other with each other's cell phones.

TikTok has been accused by various governments, not just Western ones, of being a cognitive weapon capable of numbing users, promoting anti-social values and, in extreme cases, inciting the most vulnerable to suicide. The above reasons, which according to some experts would make the application a psychological super-operation, have pushed a growing number of countries to limit or completely ban the population's access to TikTok.
