Oscar De La Hoya is a retired American boxer who has won in six different weight classes and has been famous for his fierce TV fights. He compiled a record 39-6 and received a gold medal at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona in the lightweight class.

Bio & Early Career
Oscar De La Hoya 's parents moved from Mexico to the United States before being born in Montebello, Los Angeles, California on 4 Feb 1973. The family of De La Hoya was commonly involved in boxing: his grandfather was an amateur fighter in the 1940s and his father professionally boxed in the sixties.
Originated from the boxing family, Oscar started boxing at the age of six when he idolized Olympic gold medalist Sugar Ray Leonard in 1976. Oscar was quickly improved with his family to give him the necessary education and at the age of fifteen, he won the national Junior Olympic 119-pound title and the next year, a 125-pound title.
Oscar's mother, Cecilia Gonzales De La Hoya, died in October 1990 of breast cancer. She wanted her son to be an Olympic gold medalist. Inspired by a dream of his mother, Oscar was very concerned about training in Barcelona in advance of the 1992 Olympics.
Shortly after graduating from James A. Garfield High School defeating Germany's Marco Rudolph he fulfilled his mother's dreams by winning the competition with gold. He became known as The Golden Boy and went pro later the same year.
His amateur record was 223–5.
Boxing Career
In the first round of KO, Oscar won his first pro match. After twelve fights, the WBO super featherweight title was his first world title. De La Hoya defended his junior university title successfully in January 1997.
In April of that year, he won a world weight WorldBC title in Las Vegas, defeating the reigning weight champion and 1984 Olympic gold medalist, Pernell' Sweet Pea ' Whittaker, a pro-champion in four weight classes.
On June 23rd, De La Hoya defeated Spain's WBC super weight (154 pounds) champion Javier Castillejo in 12 rounds to take his fifth title of matching with his idol, Sugar Ray Leonard. He was the youngest boxer ever to win five world titles at the age of 28.

Career Break 2004-2006

Back in 2006, De La Hoya established himself as a promoter of boxing. He announced Golden Boy Partners, a new property venture to build retail, commercial and residential developments across urban Latino communities. De La Hoya retired from boxing on April 14, 2009, following a defeat match with Floyd Mayweather.
