In an exciting development for fans of the legendary musician Prince, Ryan Coogler, a notable figure in the film industry, is set to produce a feature musical that pays homage to the artist's iconic work. This project, a jukebox musical brimming with Prince's hits, is currently underway at Universal Pictures, as confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.

The initiative, spearheaded by Coogler's Proximity Media, has been in the works since 2018 and boasts a script penned by Bryan Edward Hill.

Stellar Production Team

The production team for this highly anticipated musical includes an impressive lineup: Ryan Coogler, his partner Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian are on board as producers.

They are joined by Troy Carter of Atom Factory and Jody Gerson, the chair of Universal Music Publishing Group. Adding to the project's executive leadership, Proximity's Rebecca Cho will serve as an executive producer. This project marks another milestone in Coogler's illustrious career.

The filmmaker is already generating buzz with his next Warner Bros. feature starring Michael B. Jordan, scheduled for release on March 7, 2025. This upcoming movie, which became the subject of a fierce bidding war, underscores the dynamic and successful collaboration between Coogler and Jordan, which includes critically acclaimed films like "Fruitvale Station," "Creed," and "Black Panther." Coogler's directorial prowess was once again on display in the 2022 sequel "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." His foray into music, contributing to the lyrics of Rihanna's "Lift Me Up" for the film's soundtrack, garnered him nominations for an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a Grammy.

Prince, the muse for this ambitious musical, remains an unparalleled icon in the music industry. Known for hits like "When Doves Cry," "Let's Go Crazy," "Kiss," and "Batdance," Prince's influence extends beyond music into the cinematic realm.

He starred in "Purple Rain," a 1984 rock musical directed by Albert Magnoli, which remains a Warner Bros. cult classic. As the film approaches its 40th anniversary, the upcoming musical stands as a fitting tribute to Prince's enduring legacy and his unparalleled contribution to the world of music and entertainment.
