Rolls-Royce Coachbuild, the bespoke arm of the luxury automaker, recently unveiled the Boat Tail at the Concorso d'Eleganza, Villa d'Este on the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy. The one-of-a-kind model tells the unique story of its owner, reflecting his personal tastes and sensibilities.
Entirely handcrafted, the Boat Tail boasts body panels created from single sheets of aluminum, shaped into an intriguing form inspired by early twentieth century racing yachts. The model was commissioned by a man whose family business stems from the pearl industry and owns a private collection of classic and modern cars.
The Boat Tail exudes refinement and luxury, with a design aesthetic focused on subtle materials and precise details. At the beginning of the ordering process, the client presented the Coachbuild designers with a selection of four pearl shells, chosen for their unique color and complexity, which served as inspiration for the exterior color, one of the most complex bespoke finishes created by the brand.
Alex Innes, Rolls-Royce’s head of Coachbuild design, said:
"Every Rolls-Royce Coachbuild commission is, of course, incredibly special, but in this case, there was an additional depth of feeling. “Creating a motor car in honour of a revered client’s father and family history is an extraordinary privilege – a responsibility that we took very much to heart.
The commissioning patron's deep-rooted connection to Boat Tail is an inspiration. The result far exceeds a means of conveyance to become, quite literally, a moving work of art." The color is a shimmering mixture of shell color and soft pink, with large particles of white and bronze, adding a unique pearly quality that changes under different lighting conditions.
The cognac hood, created specifically for this model, features finely painted gold and bronze aluminum particles, along with a layer of crystal and ice matte clear lacquer, adding warmth and depth to the look of the car. The rear section houses the unique Boat Tail "butterfly design" pleasure compartment, characterized by Royal Walnut veneers, accented with rose gold inlays, satin-brushed details, creating a delicate and refined look.
The client personally selected the veneers for their beautiful properties that change color over time, eventually acquiring the shade of cognac. The front of the car features the Pantheon grille, crafted from a single block of aluminum and adorned with the Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament in rose gold tones.
The interior presents a harmonious combination of cognac leather and shells, Royal Walnut veneer, and mother-of-pearl accents. The dashboard is highlighted by a clock made of mother-of-pearl selected from the client's personal collection.
Overall, the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is a masterpiece of subtlety, refinement, elegance and attention to detail, representing the perfect blend of the client's tastes and the brand's craftsmanship.
