In the halcyon days of 2019, before the advent of the global pandemic, the fall of Quibi revealing the weaknesses in the streaming industry, and before the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike; a time when the film and television industry seemed invincible, brimming with cash, and the future looked like a seamless continuation of this prosperity, Disney had begun to rekindle the magic of a beloved classic - Honey, I Shrunk The Kids.
This reboot, a nostalgic voyage into the past, was envisaged three decades after the original release.
Shrunk: A Disney+ Revival
Tentatively titled 'Shrunk,' the project was not just a return to a well-loved narrative, but a shift in platform, being developed as a series for Disney+.
The series was set to feature Josh Gad in the lead role, as Nick Szalinski, son of Rick Moranis' iconic character, Wayne Szalinski from the original films. Notably, original director Joe Johnston was onboard, presenting a sign of continuity and commitment to the authenticity of the reboot.
Furthermore, the anticipation for the series was fueled by rumors of Rick Moranis, who had effectively retired from acting many years ago to focus on his family, making a comeback appearance. Yet, as the adage goes, "time and tide wait for no man." Unpredictable forces, like the pandemic, the highly competitive streaming market, and the WGA strike have a way of humbling even the mightiest of giants - in this case, even the 'House of Mouse'
Evidently, the highly anticipated reboot 'Shrunk' met an unexpected demise at some point in the past few years. Josh Gad, the expected leading man, recently shed light on this unfortunate turn of events via Twitter. He narrated the project's rocky journey, explaining how they were "inches from starting" the reboot when the pandemic struck.
Again, they found themselves on the brink of production, only to face scheduling conflicts that pushed them back. A third attempt, too, met a similar fate when budget constraints derailed the project. As such, the much-hyped reboot seems to have been ultimately shrunk by a combination of unforeseen circumstances.
