Russell Crowe Expresses "Jealousy" over Gladiator Sequel Cast

Renowned actor Russell Crowe, who recently graced the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Thor: Love and Thunder, is no stranger to memorable roles. Despite his upcoming appearance in the horror film The Pope's Exorcist, fans continue to associate Crowe with his Academy Award-winning portrayal of Maximus in 2000's Gladiator.

In a surprising turn of events, it has been confirmed that a Gladiator sequel is in development, featuring Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington. Crowe, however, will not be reprising his iconic role, admitting to Collider that he feels "jealous" of the new cast members.

Crowe reminisced about his time on the Gladiator set, explaining, "It's something that changed my life, really. It changed the way people regarded me and what I do for a living, and, you know, I've been very lucky to be involved in lots of big movies, but the legs on that film are incredible." He marveled at the film's continued relevance, observing that even in 2023, Gladiator is likely to be broadcast on primetime TV.

"You don't always get that kind of longevity with every film you do, so, it obviously holds a special place in my heart."

Crowe's Thoughts on the New Gladiator and Its Story

When asked about the possibility of being approached for Gladiator 2, Crowe shared his thoughts with The Ryan Tubridy Show. "It's an extension of the narrative, but it is long beyond Maximus' passing, so it doesn't really involve me at all." He expressed optimism for the project, praising the up-and-coming actor Paul Mescal, and noting the intelligent decision to focus on young Lucius as the new emperor.

As Crowe reflected on his past experiences with Gladiator, he conceded that his memories of the film have become "perfectly crystallized." Though he admitted that he didn't enjoy every minute of the experience at the time, he now harbors a nostalgic fondness for the period movie set and the immersive costumes.

Crowe confessed, "There's a slight edge of jealousy that people get to have that experience that I had once." Gladiator 2 is slated for a November 22, 2024 release date, providing fans with the opportunity to witness a new chapter in the beloved saga.
