A recent premiere for the new Netflix movie "Your Place or Mine" brought forth speculation of a rift between lead actors Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon. However, the rumors were quickly dispelled as the actors clarified their relationship in a recent interview.
"Just Friends": The Truth Behind Red Carpet Rumors
The media was quick to jump to conclusions after the actors appeared on the red carpet with serious expressions, leading to rumors of a feud. But the truth behind the faces was much simpler.
As Kutcher explained in a recent appearance on the "Chicks in Office" podcast, it was all just a matter of avoiding unwanted rumors. “My wife called me. She texted Reese and I together and said, ‘Guys, you gotta act like you like each other,’” he said, rolling his eyes at the idea of the photos getting the meme treatment.
“Here’s the thing,” Kutcher continued, “If I put my arm around her and was like all friendly with her, I’d be having an affair with her. Like, the rumor would be that I’m having an affair with her.
But, “If I stand next to her and put my hands in my pockets – so there’s no chance that like that could be the rumor – the rumor is we don’t like each other”.
"We're Really Close": Dispelling Rumors of a Rift
Kutcher went on to explain that he and Witherspoon have a close friendship, one that he didn't feel the need to defend.
“Reese and I are really good friends, we’re really close,” he said. “I don’t have to defend that”. The former “Punk’d” co-creator also spoke about the difficulties of posing for a horde of photographers on a red carpet, acknowledging that awkward expressions are bound to happen in such a high-pressure situation.
The film, which will be available for streaming on February 10, sees Kutcher and Witherspoon play friends who switch homes to figure out what they want in their relationships. With the truth behind the red carpet rumors finally cleared up, fans can look forward to enjoying the new film with a clearer understanding of the close bond between its lead actors.
