"Grey's Anatomy" fans were devastated to learn that the beloved character of Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo, will be departing from the series in the upcoming season. The news was confirmed in a new trailer for the "Grey's Anatomy" series, which revealed more details about Meredith's exit.
Meredith Grey's Departure
In the new clip, titled "I'll Follow the Sun," viewers see Meredith preparing to leave Gray Sloan and Seattle as her friends and colleagues throw her a surprise going-away party. "Sometimes change is good, sometimes change is everything," Meredith can be heard saying in the voiceover.
As she is toasted by the hospital staff on her last day, she says: "You know, I probably will be back next week." The rendition of "Chasing Cars," which was previously used to mark some emotional scenes, seems to foreshadow the final breakup between Meredith and her show partner in the upcoming scenes.
Ellen Pompeo's Statement
Ellen Pompeo, who has played the role of Meredith Grey for 19 seasons, has spoken about her decision to leave the series.
"The show has been incredible to me and I’ve loved a lot of the experience. Listen, it’s just I gotta mix it up a little bit," she said. "I’m 53, my brain is like scrambled eggs… I gotta do something new or I’m literally gonna turn into like, you can’t do the New York Times crossword puzzle every single day." She continued: "I mean 19 years – that’s more than people keep their kids in their house, like people keep their kids in their house until they’re 18 and then they send them off to college, so this is like me like going away to college." Pompeo took to Instagram to express her gratitude to the fans and the show, writing "I am eternally grateful and humbled by the love and support you have all shown me, Meredith GREY and the show for 19 seasons." She also reassured fans that this is not the end of her appearance in the series, and that her character definitely intends to appear again in some episodes. Her final episode will air in the US on February 23.
