As rumors of Jacob Elordi being cast as the next Superman continue to circulate, DC Studios has made it clear that no actor has been chosen for the role yet. This news comes after the recent announcement that Henry Cavill would not be reprising his role as Superman.
Director James Gunn took to Twitter to address the rumors surrounding Elordi's casting. In response to a fan-made mock-up of Elordi in Superman's costume, Gunn wrote, "My thoughts are no one has been cast as Superman yet.
Casting, as is almost always the case with me, will happen after the script is finished or close to finished, and it isn’t." He went on to say, "We’ll announce a few things in not too long, but the casting of Superman won’t be one of them." This statement echoes Gunn's previous statement from last month, in which he addressed the backlash from fans over Cavill's departure from the role.
Gunn wrote, "We were aware there would be a period of turbulence when we took this gig, & we knew we would sometimes have to make difficult & not-so-obvious choices, especially in the wake of the fractious nature of what came before us”.
He added, "Disrespectful outcry will never, ever affect our actions."
Gunn said earlier
he knew “there would be an unavoidable transitional period as we moved into telling a cohesive story across film, TV, animation, and gaming,” adding: “The drawbacks of that transitional period were dwarfed by the creative possibilities & the opportunity to build upon what has worked in DC so far & to help rectify what has not”.
As the head of DC Studios, Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran's decisions are made with the story and the characters in mind. "No one loves to be harassed or called names – but, to be frank, we’ve been through significantly worse.
The disrespectful outcry will never, ever affect our actions," Gunn said. In conclusion, while Elordi may be a fan favorite for the role, it is important to remember that the decision on who will play Superman is ultimately up to the studios and the creative team behind the film. Fans will have to wait for an official announcement from DC Studios.
