Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are planning to start a film production company called "Artists Equity". They stated that they decided to take this step because popular streaming services refuse to share the money earned from popular movies.
Their company will be independent, and so far they have raised $100 million from investment firm RedBird Capital Partners. Screenwriters, directors, cinematographers, editors and other film workers are, in my opinion, underpaid.
I know the kind of freedom artists crave and I want to help them, said Affleck, according to the NY TIMES. “This is the next act of my career for a long, long time,” Affleck said. Damon has committed to star in a set number of films (he wouldn’t say how many) and will produce exclusively for the company.
“As streamers have proliferated, they have really ended back-end participation, and so this is partly an effort to try to recapture some of that value and share it in a way that’s more equitable,” Affleck said.
“Not just writers and directors and stars. But also cinematographers, editors, costume designers and other crucial artists who, in my view, are very underpaid”.
Affleck, 50, will be CEO, while Damon, 52, will be chief creative officer.
Affleck will serve as executive director and Damon will serve as creative director.
During their 30-year careers, the two have grossed approximately $10 billion at the global box office. “I know what kind of freedoms artists long for and how they can be empowered — treated like grown-ups,” Affleck said Mr.
Damon said in a statement that Artists Equity would allow film and television creators to “take ownership of their creative power, providing a platform for both established and emerging filmmakers to streamline the development of their content”.
We remind you that it was recently announced that Bono is filming a documentary about the concert that the U2 group held in Sarajevo in 1997, and that Affleck and Damn are the producers.
