With the deadly shooting on the set of "Rust" that claimed the life of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, the movie does not have a segment of the film and TV tax incentives that New Mexico has been giving to certain film productions.

Following the circulation of a memo in January by the New Mexico Film Office, it was evident that "Rust" could apply for these incentives. Yet, the causes of the refusal in the grant of their applications have not been very well understood.

As it was stated these incentives could have offered up to $1. This organization was to provide about $6 million in financial assistance.

Rust Tragedy Unfolds

This tragedy took place on October 21, 2021, when a real bullet was fired out of a pistol Alec Baldwin used during a scene rehearsal that killed Hutchins on the set and later left the film’s director, Joel Souza, wounded.

Baldwin, who has maintained he did not pull the trigger of the gun, is to be trial for manslaughter by accidentally shooting next week. This independent film also features Baldwin as one of the producers of the movie. Presently, the movie Rust has not got its distributor in the United States of America.

Speaking in court, the attorney from Rust Movie Productions, Melina Spadone, revealed the tax incentive was intended to be spent on the legal compensation between the production company and Matthew Hutchins, Halyna Hutchins' widower, and their kid.

Matthew Hutchins is also listed as an executive producer of the film. This at least interferes with those financial plans, said Spadone in an interview with the Associated Press. This aspect poses another twist to an already sensitive situation of child custody and financial reconciliations by making it recur in court and in the emotional turmoil that comes with trying to move forward from the occurrence of the incident.

This last twist of events in the "Rust" case is still symbolic of continuous issues regarding the handling of mishaps and tragedies that occur on set and highlights the complexity of legal obligations in combination with the business mechanisms that underlie cinema and television productions.

Amid the ongoing lawsuits against Baldwin, the industry keeps the attention, knowing the consequences of the events for other projects and the security measures used in them.
