Jon Hamm has since assumed the responsibility of a mentor to Michael Gandolfini after the young man’s father, James Gandolfini, died in 2013. James Gandolfini, the star of the TV drama Sopranos, died of a heart attack at the age of 51, leaving behind his teenage son Michael, aged 14 years.

Growing out of an initiative from Michael, the 53-year-old Hamm has adopted Michael after the unfortunate incident that occurred with this young man. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hamm described how Michael reached out to him with words from his late father.

Michael once approached him, saying his dad had told him that Hamm was a good guy, to which Hamm replied, ‘Okay, let’s be friends’ and so the friendship blossomed and now Hamm seems to be closely guiding Michael as the young man tries his hands at acting.

Michael has also notably returned to portray his father’s iconic character Tony Soprano in the film prequel titled “The Many Saints of Newark” released in 2021, which focuses on the character’s early years and his progression to become a highly respected mob boss owing to the influence of his uncle Dickie, played by Alessandro Nivola.

The role of Tony Soprano was challenging for Michael but rewarding as he said to the PEOPLE magazine, He never said, ‘I am my father,’ I said, Tony.

Character Misconceptions Explored

Comparing fans’ interactions with such characters as Tony Soprano and Don Draper, Hamm spoke about the obscurity of these images.

He spoke of how Don Draper was regarded as this symbol of manhood, and this was similar to what James Gandolfini said of Tony Soprano and what Bryan Cranston also had said about his character Walter White in ‘Breaking Bad.

This is a special friendship that has developed between Hamm and Michael, going beyond mere friendship but mentorship as the latter deals with the challenges that come with a new acting career. Michael needs Hamm’s inspirational advice and assistance to follow their father’s footsteps and create his career in the entertainment world.

For Michael, directing “The Many Saints of Newark” becomes a rather important achievement as it helps him further understand his father’s fight and successes in acting. Both ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘Fargo,’ in which Hamm acts, retain their audience’s interest; ‘The Sopranos’ is available for streaming on Max, while ‘Fargo’ is available for streaming on Hulu.

By revolving around issues of mentorship and succession, this story underscores the critical roles that family and workplace relationships play in determining the trajectories of celebrities.
