During the interview with People Magazine, Costner was very much fond of the show as well as its team members. "I loved the show. I liked the people on the show. I liked what it was about. I love that world," he revealed Basically, he was given the concept of a series that would only comprise one season but in the form of a long television movie.

But it slowly transformed into a longer-term partnership. "I’ll do it for three seasons," he agreed, eventually contributing to five seasons. When asked in an interview about his concern, Costner said he was annoyed with the show’s long break, which took 14 months.

"There was a moment where that show for me stopped for 14 months… That’s the fact. I could have done a lot of things in that time, but I wasn’t aware that that [hold-up] was going to happen," he said.

While all these speculations about his resignation were circulating, Costner wisely decided to let his actions speak for him.

"I read all the stories," he noted. "I was disappointed that nobody on their side… ever stepped up to defend what it was I actually did for them. There came a moment where I thought, ‘Wow, when is somebody going to say something about what I have done versus what I haven’t done?'" Still, the exit was not smooth for Costner, but he did not rule out his possible return to the show, stating some circumstances that would make him consider coming back to Yellowstone.

"I’ve always felt that…It might be an interesting moment to come back and finish the mythology of this modern-day family," he said. "In the very end, I couldn’t do any more for it than I had already done," He concluded.
