Prince Harry has said he is sad to leave Frogmore Cottage, where he lived with Meghan Markle during their time as senior working royals. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved into the five-bedroom property after it was gifted to them by Queen Elizabeth II following their wedding in 2018.

They carried out an extensive renovation at taxpayer expense before later repaying the renovation costs in full. Frogmore Cottage in the grounds of Windsor Castle had been especially significant to Harry and Meghan on a sentimental note.

It was their sanctuary at the beginning of married life, where they set up residence with Archie. However, their time at Frogmore was short-lived; by the end of 2019, they announced stepping back from royal duties and moved locks, stock, and barrel to Canada, then later settling down in Montecito, California.

Frogmore Cottage Farewell

In his 2023 memoir, "Spare," Prince Harry writes about some bittersweet moments he lived in at Frogmore Cottage. He detailed a poignant meeting with his father, King Charles III, and brother, Prince William, in the wake of his grandfather's funeral, Prince Philip.

Harry sat and waited for them, and a poignant sense of loss washed over him as he realized that his cottage had been a "once-upon-a-time forever home" and now was reduced to a temporary abode. "Once upon a time, this would be my forever home.

Instead, it had proved to be just another brief stop," he wrote. The story has taken a starker turn early the following year when it was reported that King Charles had told Harry and Meghan that they had to leave Frogmore Cottage.

A source revealed to The Standard that the Sussexes were no longer renting the property, ending their official relationship with the UK dwelling. "The privilege has been withdrawn. It's over for them in the United Kingdom. If at all they should get a residence in the UK, they should buy privately," the source said.

The couple officially handed back the keys to Frogmore Cottage in June 2023. Their remaining possessions were transported to California. Sir Michael Stevens, a courtier, reported: "We can confirm that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have vacated Frogmore Cottage." This move also marked the official start of Prince Harry's US residency.
