Morgan Spurlock, the acclaimed documentary filmmaker known for his revealing explorations in "Super Size Me," passed away on Thursday, May 23, at the age of 53 due to complications from cancer, a disease he battled in private.

Just months before his untimely death, Spurlock had finalized a divorce from his wife, producer Sara Bernstein. Spurlock and Bernstein, who tied the knot in 2016, shared a son, Kallen, aged 8. The couple had filed for divorce in March 2021.

According to Randi Karmel, Spurlock's attorney, all issues between the couple were amicably resolved prior to his death. "The parties amicably settled all outstanding issues between them prior to his death," Karmel stated, expressing her condolences to Spurlock's grieving family.

Reflecting on Spurlock’s character, Karmel remarked, "It’s heartbreaking news. I know Morgan as a wonderful person to work for, very appreciative of his family, and devoted to the health and well-being of his children, in addition to being a great filmmaker." Bernstein's attorney, Shannon Simpson, has not yet commented on the matter.

Family Mourns Loss

Spurlock leaves behind another son, Laken, 17, with his ex-wife Alexandra Jamieson. Jamieson, a chef, appeared alongside Spurlock in "Super Size Me" during their marriage. Craig Spurlock, Morgan's brother, shared his thoughts on the loss: "It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan.

Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas, and generosity. The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him." Spurlock first gained significant attention with "Super Size Me" in 2004, a documentary in which he exclusively consumed McDonald's for a month to critique the fast-food industry.

His portfolio also includes titles such as "Where in the World Is Osama bin Laden?" (2008), "The Greatest Movie Ever Sold" (2011), and the follow-up to his breakout hit, "Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!" His legacy is carried on by his sons, his ex-wives, and his extended family, including his mother Phyllis, father Ben, and brothers Craig and Barry. Morgan Spurlock's life and work continue to resonate, leaving an indelible mark on the world of documentary filmmaking.
