In a revealing conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Glen Powell, known for his role in "Hit Man," shares his decision to depart the glitz of Los Angeles and return to his Texas origins. At 35, Powell, a native of Austin, Texas, feels it's time to reconnect with his roots after a 15-year stint in Hollywood.

The actor, who briefly attended the University of Texas, credits fellow Texan and star Matthew McConaughey for influencing his decision. Powell recounts McConaughey's comparison of Hollywood to 'The Matrix,' where everything feels artificial.

"Hollywood is the Matrix, man. You plug in, and it's all fake world," McConaughey had told him, emphasizing the authenticity and grounded nature of life back in Austin. McConaughey's lifestyle change from California to Texas, where he now enjoys a simpler life with his family, further inspired Powell.

This authenticity is something Powell craves, especially as his family commitments grow. "He’s right," Powell agrees, "If you’re here, you live in the Matrix all the time, there’s no separation of those worlds.

And for me, especially as my parents get older and my niece and nephew are growing up, I want a separation of those worlds”.

Family and Education First

Family is a significant draw for Powell, who recently bought a house just a half-hour away from his parents.

His move isn't just about proximity; it's about quality of life. "Being around family more keeps me out of my head," he explains, reflecting on the importance of staying grounded. In addition to familial ties, Powell is motivated by academic goals.

He plans to complete his Spanish and Early American History degree at the University of Texas—a personal commitment to his mother and a fulfillment of an emotional aspiration for himself. "It’s really important to my mom and it’s more of an emotional thing for me," he shares.

"Plus, I’m so close, I can taste it." While Powell has enjoyed significant success in Hollywood, highlighted by his breakout role in "Top Gun: Maverick" alongside Tom Cruise, he feels he's at a point where he can choose to prioritize his personal life.

As he prepares to leave his Hollywood Hills home, he notes the permanence of this decision, though he retains a residence in New York City's Tribeca.
