Kevin Costner recently reflected on his rare family appearance at the Cannes Film Festival. The 69-year-old actor discussed the experience during his guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on May 22, sharing his desire for his children to witness his professional life.

Costner attended the premiere of his latest movie, Horizon: An American Saga, on May 19, accompanied by five of his children. “I brought five of them and got them tuxedos, I bought them dresses. You know, I wanted to know … that they were going to stick with me and support me,” Costner said on the show.

At the prestigious French festival, the Yellowstone star posed on the red carpet with daughters Annie, 40, and Lily, 37, from his marriage to Cindy Silva. He was also joined by his youngest children, Cayden, 17, Hayes, 15, and Grace, 13, whom he shares with ex-wife Christine Baumgartner.

However, the family trip didn’t go exactly as planned. Costner recounted, “The minute we got there, my two sons went fishing. My three daughters ended up on a boat and said they’d see me around three or four o’clock.

Then I got a call, and they were drinking by this point, so they cruised in around eight o’clock at night. I said, ‘We came to France to be as a family,’ and they go, ‘It’s working great, dad, what do we do next?’ I said, ‘I don’t know, we need a tour director to figure that out.’”

Standing Ovation Reflections

Costner also spoke about the 10-minute standing ovation his film received at the premiere.

“I really didn’t have a sense of what was going to happen. They [the audience] were very still for most of it,” he shared with Kimmel. “I started walking my life backwards for a second, wondering how I ended up at a place like that.

We all have these dreams of where we want to be. I’ve taken some really big bites out of life, and life has taken some really big ones out of me. But I just keep going… they started the clap, and it didn’t stop”.

Though he appeared emotional during the ovation, Costner clarified, “I didn’t f—king cry. My eyes were full,” he said with a smile. “But I was moved by what happened in France. I was moved by the biggest film festival in the world”.

This positive reception comes after a tumultuous year for Costner, who separated from Baumgartner in May 2023 after 19 years of marriage. Us Weekly confirmed that Baumgartner cited irreconcilable differences in the divorce filing.

The couple’s split began with a four-month legal battle before settling in September 2023, finalizing their divorce in February 2024.
