Rory McIlroy, with his wife Erica Stoll, has left many of their followers and fans in awe after the couple decided to part ways after seven years of marriage. The cracking news has really taken many by surprise since people had been admiring this perfect couple for the past years.

However, according to reports that are coming in, the two did not end things on an impulse but they had been going through some problems in their relationship. Sources close to the couple have disclosed to Us Weekly that Stoll felt increasingly "lonely" in the marriage, attributing the emotional distance to McIlroy's demanding career.

The four-time major champion's continuous travel and commitments on the golf course made him "a hard person to be married to," a situation that reportedly grew more strained over time. The couple, who have been living disparate lives due to McIlroy's extensive travel for tournaments, reached a tipping point recently.

"The last two years have seen them lead very different lives with him on the road, and eventually, she had a breaking point," an insider revealed to Us Weekly. This breaking point came despite Stoll's initial understanding and acceptance of the demands posed by McIlroy's professional golf career.

Shift After Parenthood

The dynamics within the marriage reportedly shifted significantly after the birth of their daughter, Poppy. Stoll's priorities changed as she chose to focus more on their child, often absent from the golf scene where she had previously been a constant presence by McIlroy's side.

"She knew what she was getting into with his profession, but once they had Poppy, things really changed, and she had a new perspective," the source added. In response to the filing, McIlroy's camp issued a statement emphasizing the golfer's desire to handle the divorce respectfully and amicably, reflecting the sensitivity of the situation.

The relationship between Rory and Erica began in 2015, following McIlroy's high-profile split from tennis star Caroline Wozniacki in 2014. The couple got engaged the same year they started dating and tied the knot in April 2017.

Erica, a former PGA of America employee, had been a supportive partner, often seen cheering McIlroy at various tournaments, including last year's Ryder Cup. Meanwhile, McIlroy continues to compete at the highest levels of golf.

He finished tied for 12th at the recent PGA Championship at Valhalla, where Xander Schauffele set a record with the lowest score ever at a major championship.
