Kevin Costner recently revealed he spent $38M of his own money to help fund his ambitious $100M-budget western project, "Horizon: An American Saga." Contrary to rumors, the 69-year-old "Yellowstone" star confirmed the actual amount in his GQ cover story.

"That's the truth. That's the real number," Costner said, explaining that the film is essentially an independent venture. He and his wife, Christine Baumgartner, mortgaged their beachfront property in Santa Barbara to finance the movie, which is spread across ten acres.

Baumgartner agreed to the gamble, noting, "Yeah, one more and we're out of business." The Oscar-winning actor, who finalized his contentious divorce from Baumgartner in February after 18 years of marriage, clarified that their split was unrelated to his risky financial move.

Drawing a parallel to Ahab from Herman Melville's "Moby-Dick," Costner emphasized that unlike the obsessive captain, he takes risks solely upon himself.

Costner's Commitment to 'Horizon'

Despite the challenges, including legal battles with Baumgartner and conflicts with "Yellowstone" creator Taylor Sheridan over filming schedules, Costner remains committed to "Horizon." The two-part epic, set before and after the Civil War, is scheduled for release on June 28 and August 16.

Costner, who produced, wrote, directed, and stars in the films, believes in their long-term success. He declared, "What will define my life will be: Will people visit this movie 10 years from now? And I'm going to own that film." Costner acknowledged the high stakes, both financially and personally, but maintains his dedication to the project.

Reflecting on his career's ups and downs, he hopes his children understand his commitment to following his beliefs, regardless of potential outcomes. As he navigates these challenges, Costner is determined to finish what he started and find joy in the process. In his words, "I'm as far out on a limb right now as I've ever been."
