Kevin Costner is mourning the loss of his Yellowstone co-star Dabney Coleman, who passed away at the age of 92 on May 16. Known for his memorable roles as a villain in films like 9 to 5 and Tootsie, Coleman played John Dutton Sr., the father of Costner’s character, in a poignant flashback scene on Yellowstone.

Costner, 69, took to Instagram to pay tribute to Coleman. Sharing stills from their scene together, Costner wrote, “One of the most heart-wrenching scenes I've been a part of. What an honor to have gotten to work with Dabney Coleman.

May he rest in peace”. Although Coleman's appearance on Yellowstone was brief, his role left a lasting impact. His character’s interaction with Costner’s John Dutton revealed the deep bond between father and son and underscored why John Dutton was so determined to keep his land in Montana.

Yellowstone showrunner Taylor Sheridan also reflected on Coleman’s passing and his significant contributions to the acting world. In an interview with Deadline, Sheridan praised Coleman’s influence and recalled working with him in 2003.

“I learned priceless lessons in the power of simplicity as an artist and witnessed Dabney’s humility, grace, and patience,” Sheridan said. “His performance on Yellowstone was another lesson in bravery and emotional honesty.

Dabney Coleman is a treasure. He will be missed and admired, always”.

Family and Career Reflections

Coleman’s daughter, Quincy Coleman, confirmed his passing in a statement to PEOPLE, highlighting his passion and humor.

“My father crafted his time here on Earth with a curious mind, a generous heart, and a soul on fire with passion, desire, and humor that tickled the funny bone of humanity,” Quincy said. “As he lived, he moved through this final act of his life with elegance, excellence, and mastery”.

Dabney Coleman was celebrated for his tough-guy roles in films and TV shows, including You've Got Mail, Buffalo Bill, and Boardwalk Empire. His career spanned decades, earning him admiration and respect from colleagues and fans alike.

Following his death, many celebrities paid tribute to Coleman’s legacy. Lily Tomlin shared heartfelt memories on X (formerly Twitter), posting photos from their time on the set of 9 to 5. “We just loved him,” Tomlin wrote.

Coleman is survived by his sister, Beverly Coleman McCall; his children, Meghan, Kelly, Randy, and Quincy Coleman; and his grandchildren, Hale and Gabe Torrance, Luie Freundl, and Kai and Coleman Biancaniello.
