The standout actress for her role in the recently released "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," Kate Hudson, shared a harmonious relationship with her 20-year-old son, Ryder, from former husband Chris Robinson. Now, in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE for this week's cover story, the 45-year-old Hudson has described how their relationship has changed and grown through the years, from the traditional mother-and-son relationship to a deep, supportive friendship.

Of her bond with Ryder, Hudson reflected, "Because I was young when I had him, it's a different relationship than with my other kids. He's seen me through all of my good times, my bad times, this boyfriend, not that boyfriend." Now, as she prepares to release her album, "Glorious," on Friday, May 17, Hudson explained that Ryder even inspired one of her songs, "Live Forever." Hudson highlighted Ryder's position as the one who had always protected her by saying, "He's seen me through it all.

And that's very different because I never had an adult life really without him." Again, she commented further on their bond of togetherness, saying, "I think he's very protective of me. We've been through so much together."

Hudson's Patchwork Family

Hudson has a son with Ryder, as well as a 12-year-old son with Matt Bellamy, named Bingham, and a 5-year-old daughter, Rani, with Danny Fujikawa.

Hudson clearly referred to her great "patchwork family" with warmth as she spoke of the bond between her children. "We are very connected, and we are very close," Hudson continued. "Love can change form. It's interesting when you have that modern family; there's so much love for all the kids." Hudson went on to add that with her exes' kids and their daughter Rani, they are now one big sisterly bond, nurturing the sense of a big loving family.

"The kids feel like they have this huge family," Hudson said. "There is something that has been able to be nurtured in our family that is personally what I think is, it's very rare." Hudson shared an adorable video post on Instagram, with pictures of her children growing up and snaps from her pregnancy.

"What do I love the most? Well…that's easy ???? Happy Mama's day to all the Mama's out there!" she captioned. "To my beautiful kids, thank you for making our life crazy, fun, wild, cozy, lovely, and really really loud. Love being your mama. You are my everything's ??????."
