Jimmy Carter, the former President's grandson, shared a tearful update on his grandfather's health, saying the former President is near death. Speaking at the 28th Rosalynn Carter Georgia Mental Health Forum at the Carter Center, Jason Carter gave some remarks over his grandfather's condition.

"My grandfather is hanging in there. He's been in hospice, as you know, over a year and a half now," said Jason Carter. He has a special relationship with the Carter Center and its work as chair of the center's board of trustees for the global charity, which his grandparents founded in 1982.

Former President Jimmy Carter, who will be 99, has entered into hospice care. Although this is generally seen as end-of-life care, it can also be provided over an extended period of time. Last year, the Carter Center announced the former president would not be receiving any "additional medical intervention."

Faith Journey's End

"He really is, I think, coming to the end that, as I’ve said before, there’s a part of this faith journey that is so important to him, and there’s a part of that faith journey that you only can live at the very end, and I think he has been there in that space," Jason Carter expressed, highlighting his grandfather’s acceptance and peace during this stage of life.

The update also touched on the recent loss of Rosalynn Carter, Jimmy Carter's wife of 77 years, who passed away last year at the age of 96. Jason Carter spoke about the impact of her death on the family, particularly on his grandfather.

"Her passing was a difficult moment for all of us – including my grandfather," he shared. Jason Carter recounted to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution how his grandfather spent hours saying goodbye to his wife in her final moments.

"He had this opportunity to say goodbye, and after that, he was just totally at peace with it. And it was an incredible thing after 77 years of marriage to watch that type of closure," he reflected during an appearance on the "Monica Pearson Show." Despite his frail health, Jimmy Carter attended the memorial services for Rosalynn Carter, though he was not able to speak at the tributes.

This poignant moment underscored the deep bond and love shared between the Carters over their many decades together. As the family continues to navigate this challenging time, the legacy of both Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter remains a testament to their enduring commitment to service and faith.
