In the realm of Hollywood blockbusters, it's often the unseen forces behind the scenes that shape a film's direction. Such is the case for Anthony Ramos in the highly-anticipated sequel "Twisters," set to hit theaters on July 17.

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly as part of EW's 2024 Summer Preview, Ramos, known for his roles in "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" and "In the Heights," delved into the intriguing dynamics at play behind the scenes of the film.

Ramos, who portrays the character Javi in the standalone sequel to the 1996 tornado-centric hit, revealed that it was the opportunity to work with esteemed director Lee Issac Chung that initially drew him to the project.

"It was a director," Ramos emphasized, speaking of Chung's reputation for crafting intimate, character-driven narratives. "I knew he was going to bring the heart and soul to it," Ramos added, underscoring Chung's unique vision for the film.

"Twisters" exists within the same universe as its predecessor but offers a fresh storyline with entirely new characters. Ramos's character, Javi, shares a compelling backstory with the film's lead, Kate (played by Daisy Edgar Jones), as they navigate the aftermath of a significant storm that leaves a lasting impact on their lives.

Spielberg's Influence on Ramos

Initially envisioning Javi with a Southern accent, Ramos's plans took an unexpected turn when legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg intervened. Spielberg, who serves as an executive producer on the "Twisters" franchise, encouraged Ramos to portray Javi in his own dialect, a decision that resonated deeply with Ramos.

"It makes me feel it's possible for a kid from the hood to go to a school like OU, study meteorology, be this brilliant meteorologist and storm chaser," Ramos reflected, highlighting the significance of authentic representation on screen.

In addition to Ramos, "Twisters" boasts a stellar ensemble cast including Glen Powell, Maura Tierney, and Sasha Lane, among others. Ramos teased audiences with promises of "wild" action sequences filmed on location in Oklahoma, promising an immersive cinematic experience unlike any other.

As anticipation builds for the release of "Twisters" this summer, Ramos's insights into the film's development offer a tantalizing glimpse into the creative process behind this thrilling sequel. Get ready to be swept away when "Twisters" makes its theatrical debut on July 17.
