Despite anticipation for her appearance, Katy Perry was noticeably absent from the 2024 Met Gala. Usually, on the first Monday of May, celebrities paraded thematic fashion statements. This year, when the theme was set to be "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion," fans were waiting to see Perry, known for making Met Gala entrances in dramatic form.

The 39-year-old singer, however, took to Instagram to explain why she didn't attend the really glam affair. Perry is a judge on "American Idol" and joked on Instagram that she couldn't make it to the Met with a caption that read, "couldn't make it to the MET, had to work." Attached to the text were several AI images of Perry in fantastical gowns appropriate to the Met's theme.

One saw her in a floral ballgown with detailed shrubbery, and another featured a metallic corset cascading with greenery. Other inclusions in the post were snapshots of a fan who waited outside the Met Gala, Perry in the recording studio, and an amusing text exchange with her mom, who also fell for the AI-generated outfit.

"What a gorgeous gown, you look like the Rose Parade, you are your own float lol," her mom texted. Perry responded, "lol mom the AI got you too, BEWARE!"

Perry's Met Gala Absence

The disappearance of Perry marks the second year running that the singer bowed out of the fashion event, despite her past history of iconic Met Gala looks—including her donning of a cheeseburger and chandelier, and an angel wing in 2019 and 2018, respectively.

Her last appearance at the Met in 2022 was a far cry, with the starlet featured in a starkly simple black and white Oscar de la Renta gown. Perry had hinted at skipping the Met while speaking to ET on the 'American Idol' red carpet.

Describing the show as her very own "garden party," Perry called herself "the butterfly you have been waiting to see." With Perry focused on her music and now wrapping up her seven-season run on "American Idol," rumors of her replacement are rampant.

Fellow judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan have thrown out a few names, including Kelly Clarkson and Meghan Trainor. For Richie, the key quality was someone fun, who doesn't have an ego because the show is all about the lighthearted dynamic: "We're going to insult each other so much," he said.

Perry fans will have to wait till next year in hopes that she will go back onto the Met Gala red carpet. Meanwhile, the commitment of the singer to her music and television role seems to continue being the reason that keeps her from this annual extravagant fashion event.
