In a sudden turn of events, U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was forced to cancel a campaign rally in North Carolina this Saturday due to bad weather. Minutes before he was due to take the stage, a decision to this effect was taken given the safety of thousands who had thronged an open venue in Wilmington.

Trump himself was the one who announced the news, calling in from his private jet to a loudspeaker system. "I'm just devastated that this could happen, but we want to keep everybody safe," he said as the lighting strikes lit up the skies overhead.

Then came the look of disappointment on the thousands who had been sitting out since early in the sweltering heat and humidity as Trump told them he was sorry: "I think we're gonna have just to do a rain check. I'm so sad," he added.

Trump's Trial Begins

It also came as Trump marked an unusual inflection point: the historic start this week of his criminal trial in New York, where prosecutors accuse him of making an illegal hush-money payment to a porn star.

The trial started last week; the jury selection is completed, and opening statements are expected on Monday. Despite the legal roadblocks, Trump's campaign is in full throttle as he gears himself for a brutal fight with Democratic President Joe Biden in the general election on November 5.

The poll fight is very close, especially within the battleground states, including North Carolina, where Trump narrowly carried against Biden in the 2020 polls. North Carolina has, in recent times, emerged as one of the most swing-dependent states in deciding on the presidential victory.

The campaigns from either party fight heart and soul in the state, much evidenced by Biden's recent visit or the visit to the state by Vice-President Kamala Harris last month, giving a realization that North Carolina is a substantial ingredient of the political spectrum.

Trump is also fighting an array of other criminal charges in Washington, Georgia, and Florida. His sudden rally cancellation also highlights how fickle the campaign trail can be -- and how many different factors can drive it at any given moment. With both camps focusing on North Carolina, the state is an important battleground in the fight for the presidency.
