In a striking commentary that echoes the controversies of royal history, Sally Bedell Smith, a distinguished American author, has recently criticized Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. Smith, who has penned an insightful exploration into King George VI's pivotal role in the monarchy after Edward VIII's historic abdication, draws a parallel between Meghan and Harry's relationship and that of Edward and Wallis Simpson, the latter couple famously known as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

During her appearance at the Oxford Literary Festival, Smith articulated how Meghan Markle, described as "very narcissistic, very controlling, very dominating," has significantly altered the relationship dynamics within the royal family, especially between Prince Harry and his brother, Prince William.

She suggested that William might feel deep "betrayal" due to these changes. Smith's comparison extends back to 1936 when Edward VIII surrendered his throne to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee, resulting in their subsequent exile in France.

She highlighted that although the contexts differ, Harry is not in direct line to the throne as Edward was—parallels in the emotional tumult and perceived betrayals felt within the royal family resonate through time.

Monarchy's Saving Grace

The author delves into these complex dynamics further in her latest book, "George VI and Elizabeth: The Marriage That Saved the Monarchy," where she argues that Edward VIII's abdication averted the potential reign of an "irresponsible King," thereby fortifying the monarchy through the leadership of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth during the tumultuous times of the Second World War.

Smith does not shy away from addressing the darker aspects of the Windsor saga, including the Duke of Windsor's deceptive actions towards his brother, King George VI, and the controversial ties to fascism that marred Edward and Wallis's legacy.

This historical perspective provides a backdrop to the ongoing discourse surrounding the Duke and Duchess of S-----, whose actions and decisions continue to spark debate within and beyond the confines of royal discourse. The author's comments come when the royal family's dynamics are under intense scrutiny, with Prince Harry and Prince William recently making separate appearances at the Diana Legacy Awards in London.

Prince Harry's speech, delivered via video link after his brother's departure, underscored the continuing divide between the siblings, a scenario that Smith's historical comparisons poignantly illuminate.
