In a move that's sent ripples through the entertainment industry, celebrated talk show host Bill Maher has parted ways with Creative Artists Agency (CAA), his representation for over two decades. This decision came on the heels of a conspicuous omission from the guest list for Bryan Lourd's exclusive Oscar party, a private gathering that saw the attendance of a constellation of stars and industry moguls this past Saturday night at Lourd's residence.

Maher, the sharp-witted anchor of HBO's "Real Time," reportedly took issue with not being invited to the soirée, a prestigious event that saw the likes of J.J. Abrams, Barry Diller, Vice President Kamala Harris, Margot Robbie, and Disney's Bob Iger, among other luminaries.

The gathering, happening concurrently with the Motion Picture & Television Fund's Night Before party, also welcomed numerous CAA clients, including Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston, spotlighting the agency's deep connections within the industry.

Oscar Party Rift

The exclusion comes as a surprise, especially considering the timing – just one day prior, CAA had celebrated its Oscar-nominated clients at an event at Sunset Tower, showcasing talents such as Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and Emily Blunt.

Maher, in contrast, was spotted at a competing agency's (WME) Oscar event on Friday night, underscoring a potential rift. Steven Lafferty, head of television at CAA, had been Maher's primary agent, guiding the comedian through various career milestones, including the recent negotiation of a two-year extension for "Real Time." This extension secures the show's continuation through its 24th season, reinforcing its status as one of HBO's longest-standing originals.

Since its debut in 2003, "Real Time" has become a staple of political commentary and satire, trailing only "Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel" in longevity on the network. This bold move by Maher to sever ties with CAA underscores the intricate dynamics of relationships within Hollywood's elite circles.

It also highlights the significant impact personal connections and perceived slights can have on professional collaborations in the entertainment sphere.
