It has just been announced recently by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) that they will be paying tribute to the late Matthew Perry during their forthcoming Television Awards. The move comes after a backlash for not including Perry in an In Memoriam segment during the BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday night.

A BAFTA spokesperson added, "Matthew Perry will be remembered in our forthcoming BAFTA Television Awards in May 2024." Conspicuously absent was Perry, most famous for his role as Chandler Bing in Friends, from the segment that paid homage to a number of luminaries, among them Jane Birkin, Shirley Anne Field, Richard Roundtree, Michael Gambon, Tom Wilkinson and Carl Weathers.

It also included an emotional performance of "Time After Time" by "Ted Lasso" star Hannah Waddingham.

Perry's Cinematic Impact

While his greatest work may have been on the small screen, Perry also made his mark on the big screen.

His range in late '90s and early 2000s movies like "Fools Rush In" opposite Salma Hayek and "The Whole Nine Yards" with Bruce Willis proved he has unappreciated acting chops. His fans and even critics of the movie industry flooded social media to express disappointment at the omission.

And one user said: "Shocking omission of Matthew Perry in the memoriam section tonight - yes, he was famous for a tv show but also a movie actor. poor show #BAFTAs." Another added: "I get that they will probably do a proper tribute at the TV BAFTAs but a mention at least at the Film Awards would have been lovely.

Having read his book Matthew was proud to be asked to act in films and would have appreciated the recognition." Perry had died suddenly in October, and that was a shock that shook the world of entertainment. The actor was found unconscious in a hot tub at his home in Southern California.

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office, "Perry's death was from the acute effects of ketamine." He was 54. Earlier this year, the Emmys paid an emotional homage to Perry during their In Memoriam segment.

The tribute began with Charlie Puth and The War and Treaty duo offering musical performances, both later segueing into a rendition of the "Friends" theme song over an image of Perry, and it proved quite a punch. .an ever-existing legend, which still creates a buzz in the ears of many of his fans worldwide, hence being honored with BAFTA at the Television Awards.
