Jamie Dornan, known for his role in the controversial 'Fifty Shades' series, recently opened up about his experience and the aftermath of the film's release. Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, Dornan shed light on his retreat from public life following the mixed reception of the first 'Fifty Shades of Grey' movie in 2015.

The film, which became a cultural phenomenon, was critically panned, earning a mere 25% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It even led to a Razzie Award nomination for worst director for Sam Taylor-Johnson. This reception was a stark contrast to Dornan's previous acclaim, particularly his lauded performance in 'The Fall', which earned him BAFTA nominations and critical acclaim.

Dornan's Hidden Retreat

Reflecting on this tumultuous period, Dornan revealed, "I think I hid. We went down to Sam and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s place in the country. They let us use it while they were away. It was there that we sort of shut ourselves off from the world a bit." Despite the critical backlash, 'Fifty Shades of Grey' was a box office success, which paved the way for its sequels.

Dornan, contractually obligated, reprised his role. He shared his mixed feelings about continuing the series: "It made so much money that films two and three were greenlit overnight. It was a strange situation. There was ridicule, and yet I was committed to two more films, fully aware of the further criticism that would follow." However, Dornan harbors no regrets about his involvement in the 'Fifty Shades' franchise.

He acknowledges its impact on his career, noting that recent positive reviews of his work often reference his 'Fifty Shades' role. "Regret that I did them? No," he affirmed. "Even the glowing reviews for my recent work don't fail to mention 'Fifty Shades'

It's a part of my career, a defining one, indeed." Dornan's candid reflections offer a glimpse into the life of an actor navigating the highs and lows of Hollywood, highlighting the personal and professional challenges faced when a film garners widespread attention, both positive and negative.
