In a candid revelation on BBC's 'Desert Island Discs,' Jamie Dornan, the Irish actor renowned for his portrayal of Christian Grey in '50 Shades of Grey,' opened up about the challenges and backlash he faced following his role in the controversial film.

Dornan, 41, admitted that the intense scrutiny and criticism compelled him and his wife, Amelia Warner, to seek refuge in seclusion. The film, which hit the screens in 2015, marked a stark contrast from Dornan's previous work, particularly his acclaimed performance in the drama series 'The Fall.'

Reflecting on this transition, Dornan shared, “I think I hid. I am coming off the back of career-altering reviews for The Fall to just ridicule almost”. This shift in public perception was a significant ordeal for the actor, leading him and Warner to temporarily retreat to the countryside residence of the film’s director, seeking solace and privacy.

Dornan's Contractual Struggle

Dornan’s involvement in the '50 Shades' trilogy meant that he was contractually obliged to continue his role in two subsequent films. He expressed his apprehension about this commitment, aware of the continuing criticism that awaited him.

“It was a strange thing because then you are like there is a bit of ridicule here and I’m now contractually doing two more of them knowing that there would be more of that damnation to come,” he remarked.

Despite branching out into other successful roles post-'50 Shades,' Dornan observed that his association with the franchise continued to shadow his career. He noted that most reviews of his subsequent work invariably mentioned his role in '50 Shades of Grey.'

Dornan's experience highlights the complexities and unforeseen consequences actors often face in their career choices, especially when involved in high-profile and controversial projects. His journey from critical acclaim to intense scrutiny and back to a respected position in the industry serves as a testament to the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of a career in the cinematic arts.
