In a candid conversation, renowned actor Robert De Niro shared his thoughts and experiences on fatherhood and raising his youngest daughter, Gia. The "Killers of the Flower Moon" star, in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, emphasized his desire to raise Gia, who he shares with his partner Tiffany Chen, bilingually.
De Niro, at the age of 80, is keen on teaching her both English and Chinese, reflecting the child's heritage. "She is half-Chinese. I want to try to teach her Chinese and show her nursery rhymes in English and Chinese. I'm trying to have her learn both," he stated.
Earlier, in an October interview with The Guardian, De Niro opened up about the challenges and joys of parenting at his age. "It doesn’t get easier. It is what it is. It’s okay," he remarked, highlighting his supportive role alongside his girlfriend, who he credits with much of the parenting responsibilities.
"I mean, I don’t do the heavy lifting. I’m there, I support my girlfriend. But she does the work. And we have help, which is so important," De Niro added.
De Niro's Parenting Joy
The actor, known for his diverse roles in films like "Joy" and "The Intern," expressed his enjoyment in fatherhood, despite its varying dynamics with different age groups.
"Of course I do enjoy all of it," he said. "With a baby it’s different [than] with my 11-year-old. My adult children. My grandchildren. It’s all different," De Niro elaborated, shedding light on the different stages of parenting he has experienced.
De Niro further delved into the evolution of parenting in a June 2023 appearance on the "Today" show. He spoke about the awareness that comes with age, particularly in understanding family dynamics. "I have certain awareness — when you’re older you have awareness of certain things in life, dynamics, everything, family dynamics," he shared.
Emphasizing the unavoidable learning curve in life and parenting, he concluded, "You can’t avoid learning certain things and how you can deal with those and manage them and this and that, the usual. It's amazing, but I'm very happy about it." This reflective stance from De Niro provides a unique insight into the life of one of Hollywood's most esteemed actors, as he navigates the complex and rewarding journey of fatherhood.
