At the London premiere of the highly anticipated film adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel, "Wonka," Timothée Chalamet shared insightful reflections on his journey through the realms of dance and singing for his lead role.

The young actor, known for his profound performances in serious dramas, embarked on a new artistic path with this project, challenging himself in the vibrant world of musical cinema. Dressed in a striking pink suit, Chalamet expressed his deep connection to dance, citing his family's background in the art form.

"My mom is a dance teacher, my grandmother was a dancer, and my sister is a dancer. I've always been surrounded by it, but engaging in it professionally is an entirely different ballgame," he remarked. This venture into dance was not just a role requirement but a personal exploration that he described as "a great learning experience." Regarding his vocal performance in the film, Chalamet humorously admitted the assistance of auto-tune, highlighting the technological nuances of modern filmmaking.

His candidness about the process added a layer of authenticity to his portrayal of the iconic character Willy Wonka.

Chalamet's Wonka Transformation

In a conversation with PEOPLE, Chalamet delved deeper into his approach to the character, noting the shift from his usual gravitas-filled roles to Wonka's whimsical, playful nature.

"I had to tap back into that sense of play and freedom I experienced in my high school acting days, which I haven't done in over a decade. It was a significant learning curve, but once we got into the groove, it felt like magic," he shared.

"Wonka," a prequel to Dahl's beloved 1964 novel "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," presents a fresh perspective on the enigmatic candy magnate's backstory. Chalamet's portrayal has been eagerly awaited by fans and critics alike, with high expectations for his character interpretation.

Paul King, the director and co-writer of "Wonka," praised Chalamet's performance in an interview with PEOPLE. He emphasized the actor's ability to capture the character's complexity, blending humor, mystery, and a heartwarming sincerity.

"What makes his performance truly remarkable is his comedic timing or portrayal of Wonka's naughty side and the profound depth and heart he brings to the role. He's not only a master of his craft but also an actor who can infuse soul into his characters," King stated.

As "Wonka" prepares to captivate audiences worldwide, Chalamet's multifaceted talent and dedication to his art are set to redefine his already impressive career, showcasing his versatility and passion for storytelling.
