Emmy-nominated actress Kerry Washington has extended her dynamic partnership with ABC Signature, simultaneously securing a second season for the acclaimed Hulu dramedy, "UnPrisoned." This development marks a continued collaboration with the studio, reinforcing Washington's multifaceted role as both a star and a producer in the industry.
"UnPrisoned," a project of Disney's Onyx Collective and ABC Signature, features Washington in the lead role as a single mother navigating the complexities of life when her father, portrayed by Delroy Lindo, is released from prison and joins her household, which includes her son.
The show has garnered considerable attention since its premiere in March, emerging as Onyx Collective's most successful debut on Hulu. Though specific viewership figures remain undisclosed, the series has received largely favorable reviews from critics, solidifying its place in contemporary television.
Washington's Dual Role
In addition to her on-screen role, Washington serves as an executive producer for the show, a responsibility she shares with Lindo. The ensemble cast includes notable talents such as Marque Richardson, Faly Rakotohavana, Jordyn McIntosh, Brenda Strong, and Jee Young Han.
The series, which draws inspiration from the real-life experiences of its creator Tracy McMillan, also boasts the executive production efforts of Washington's Simpson Street partner Pilar Savone, along with Yvette Lee Bowser, Joy Gorman Wettels, and Jen Braeden.
This renewal of Washington's deal with ABC Signature ensures the continuation of her company, Simpson Street, at the studio. Since its inception in 2016, Simpson Street has produced significant projects like Hulu's "Little Fires Everywhere" and "Reasonable Doubt," both receiving acclaim and, in the case of the latter, a renewal for a second season.
Tracy Underwood, executive vice president of creative affairs at ABC Signature, praised Washington for setting a high bar in the industry, describing her as the "gold standard" of a multi-talented professional—passionate, prolific, and exceptionally kind.
Underwood expressed excitement for future collaborations, highlighting the critical success of "UnPrisoned" and "Little Fires Everywhere." Washington's representation includes CAA, Washington Square Arts, The Lede Company, and attorney Gretchen Rush, signifying her established presence in the entertainment sector.
This renewed deal and the ongoing success of "UnPrisoned" not only reinforce Washington's versatility and influence in Hollywood but also promise continued innovative storytelling and compelling television experiences for audiences worldwide.
