The impending release of John Stamos' memoir, 'If You Would Have Told Me,' scheduled for October 24, 2023, ignited a renewed interest in the actor's life. As the countdown begins, Stamos has chosen to open up about one of his life's most emotionally challenging chapters - his marriage and subsequent divorce from actress Rebecca Romijn.
In an exclusive interview with People Magazine, the 60-year-old actor offered an intimate glimpse into the heartache that followed the end of his marriage to Romijn in the early 2000s. Stamos, known for his affable persona on-screen, confessed that revisiting this tumultuous period for his memoir was not easy.
"The chapters centred around Romijn were incredibly tough to write," he acknowledged. "The devastation I felt post-divorce lingered on for an extended period. It's one thing to heal over a year, but the pain persisted for many." During the interview, Stamos did not shy away from recounting the depth of his emotional turmoil during those years.
"There was a point when I viewed her almost as the Devil. The disdain I harboured was intense and took over my life," he admitted. It was a time when he struggled to reconcile his personal feelings and the public image of their breakup.
Stamos' Personal Growth and Public Perception
However, as Stamos delved into the writing process, he found catharsis in the principles of the Alcoholics Anonymous program, particularly in its fourth step, which requires individuals to confront their grievances.
"When I laid out all my grievances as part of my recovery, I realized that maybe the fault wasn't solely hers. Looking back, I can admit that the blame might be shared," Stamos reflected, illustrating his growth and capacity for self-reflection.
Stamos also addressed the public's perception of their separation. "Many believed she left me at a high point in her career while I struggled. While it hurt, I can't fault her for our life choices. Indeed, at that juncture, she was scaling new heights professionally, and I was facing challenges," he mused, providing insight into the complexities of their relationship dynamics.
On a happier note, Stamos found love again. In February 2018, he married Caitlin McHugh, 37, and two months later, they welcomed a son named Billy into their lives, marking a beautiful new chapter for the actor. Rebecca Romijn, now 50, has also found lasting happiness.
She married actor Jerry O'Connell in 2007, and together, they have become proud parents to twin daughters, Dolly and Charlie.
