Arnold Schwarzenegger, the iconic former bodybuilder and actor, has openly acknowledged his past mistakes, particularly his affair with housekeeper Mildred Baena. The revelation in 2011 dramatically ended his long-standing marriage to journalist Maria Shriver.
In a candid interview with People magazine this past Sunday, Schwarzenegger remarked, “There was no feud, no fight. It was purely my mistake”. This affair resulted in the birth of Joseph, Baena and Schwarzenegger's son, coming just five days after Schwarzenegger and Shriver celebrated the birth of their son, Christopher.
Although the revelation was a significant blow to their marriage, the 76-year-old “Terminator” actor emphasizes that he maintains a harmonious relationship with Shriver, aged 67. Schwarzenegger poignantly stated, “My journey with Maria will always persist.
Even if the dynamics have changed, my affection for her remains unwavering”.
Prioritizing Kids Amidst Turmoil
The celebrated actor was keen to stress the importance of prioritizing their children amidst the chaos. He noted, “Our primary concern has always been that our children should never bear the brunt of our actions”.
The duo continuously collaborate on family events, ensuring their children remain shielded from their personal conflicts. This commitment to co-parenting involves their other children, Katherine, 33; Christina, 32; and Patrick, 30.
However, sources from Page Six reported some tension, suggesting that Shriver's children harbor some resentment towards Joseph, Schwarzenegger’s son from the affair. “Despite Arnold treating Joseph equitably, the other siblings unfortunately direct their anger at him,” an insider shared.
A gripping revelation from Netflix’s documentary titled “Arnold” discloses that Shriver confronted the affair during a 2011 counseling session. The therapist questioned Schwarzenegger directly about Joseph, noting the child's uncanny resemblance to him.
Recalling the moment, Schwarzenegger mentioned, “It felt like my heart had stopped. But I confessed”. Their 25-year matrimony publicly ended in May 2011, and the divorce wasn't officially concluded until 2021, largely due to intricate property settlements.
Since the split, Schwarzenegger has found companionship with physical therapist Heather Milligan despite a significant age gap. Meanwhile, Shriver was previously linked with political analyst Matthew Dowd, but rumors suggest a separation in 2020.
