Acclaimed director James Gunn has some exciting news for DC Universe fans. The mastermind behind some of the most iconic superhero films has announced that three stars are set to make a much-anticipated return to the DC Universe, and the revelations have set the entertainment world abuzz.
As Hollywood emerges from its recent strike, Gunn, in partnership with Peter Safran at the helm of DC Studios, has unveiled that renowned celebrities Viola Davis, John Cena, and Xolo Maridueña will once again grace the screen as their unforgettable characters: Amanda Waller, Peacemaker, and Blue Beetle.
In a recent update on Instagram’s Threads, Gunn dropped the bombshell. Fans of the Blue Beetle can rejoice as Xolo Maridueña reprises his role. Meanwhile, John Cena, following the success of his 2022 release, will once again don the suit of Peacemaker in the show's upcoming season. Viola Davis, with her commanding voice, will lend her vocals for the animated series "Creature Commandos."
DC's Upcoming Blockbusters Revealed
Delving deeper into DC's future lineup, Gunn hinted that "Creature Commandos" might just be the next big thing, calling it the subsequent "canon" DC release. This revelation hints at the shifting dynamics since Gunn and Safran's entry into the studio. Before their epoch, "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" is expected to be the last standalone film, which is gearing up for a December release. Following closely will be the highly anticipated "Superman Legacy."
"Superman Legacy" has already garnered interest, with David Corenswet set to take flight as the Man of Steel. Beside him, Rachel Brosnahan will portray the indomitable Lois Lane. Brosnahan commented on the intricate DC Universe, saying, "It's a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but confusion is understandable given the fresh slate of the DCU."
David Corenswet's inclusion is especially notable. After making waves in Ryan Murphy’s 2019 Netflix drama, "The Politician," he took a darker turn in A24’s indie horror, "Pearl," last year. With these casting choices and Gunn's leadership, the DC Universe is poised for a vibrant new chapter.
