Elon Musk, the tech magnate and visionary behind Tesla and SpaceX, has never been one to tread the conventional path, and that applies to his romantic endeavors as well. A recently unveiled excerpt from a forthcoming book reveals an intriguing glimpse into the early days of his courtship with the acclaimed musician, Grimes.
In the early stages of their relationship, Grimes, known for her hit “Oblivion,” playfully likened Musk to the legendary Gandalf from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth saga. This comparison sparked Musk's curiosity, leading him to challenge Grimes to an impromptu "Lord of the Rings" trivia session.
According to author Walter Isaacson, Musk's motive was to ascertain the depth of Grimes’ admiration for Tolkien’s world. Grimes aced the challenge, to which Musk candidly remarked, “That mattered to me”.

But the trivia wasn’t the highlight—or the most peculiar moment—of their date. As they made their way to a restaurant, Musk sought to showcase the prowess of his Tesla. In what Grimes later described as a heart-stopping moment, Musk accelerated the car, then audaciously took his hands off the steering wheel, entrusting the vehicle's autopilot system, and even momentarily covering his eyes.
While such a move goes against the Model Y owner's manual recommendations, Grimes equated the thrilling experience to a "scene out of a Marvel movie." Taking a trip down memory lane, the book excerpt also offers a peek into their very first date.
Instead of a candlelit dinner or a stroll by the beach, Musk had a unique proposition: a tour of the Tesla factory in Fremont, California. Isaacson humorously notes that for Musk, this was his “idea of a good date”.
Grimes recounted, “We just walked the floor all night, and I watched him try to fix things,” subtly poking fun with the word “try”. In a testament to the couple's eccentricity, Grimes once presented Musk with an unconventional gift: a box filled with animal bones she had curated.
While the dynamics of their relationship might raise eyebrows, it's clear that their unique blend of quirks and passions drew them together. However, one can't help but chuckle at the thought of Musk employing similar theatrics with his children in the future. Time will tell.
