Award-winning actor Kevin Costner is experiencing an acrimonious divorce from his wife of 18 years, handbag designer Christine Baumgartner. The unraveling of their relationship began in May when Baumgartner cited "irreconcilable differences" and initiated divorce proceedings.
However, recent developments suggest a continually escalating feud between the pair. According to legal documents Costner submitted on Thursday, as reported by TMZ, he alleges that Baumgartner took possession of his property without his knowledge or consent.
A significant accusation within the filings involves Baumgartner reportedly using a credit card, traditionally reserved for Costner's family household expenses and paid by him, to settle her divorce lawyer's fees. The actor further claimed that his soon-to-be ex-wife withdrew cash advances from other house staff credit cards and used funds from his property to procure a criminal defense lawyer, although the reason behind this need remains undisclosed.
Prenup Hints at Premeditation
In an interesting twist, Costner suggested that Baumgartner had premeditated the separation, as their prenuptial agreement allowed her to retain her personal vehicle. This seems to be substantiated by the fact that Baumgartner purchased a high-end car months before the divorce, deviating from their previous practice of leasing vehicles.
These allegations surfaced just after a tentative court decision ordering Costner to pay a hefty monthly child support sum of $129,755. Both parents are contesting for joint custody of their three children, aged 16, 14, and 13.
Initially, Baumgartner requested $248,000 monthly for child support to sustain the children's accustomed lifestyle, later reducing the sum to $217,300. On the contrary, Costner, leveraging the prenuptial agreement, contends that he should not be required to pay more than $51,940 per month.
Adding fuel to the fiery divorce proceedings, Costner also accused Baumgartner of seeking child support money for her cosmetic surgeries. This accusation was reported by "Page Six." The saga doesn't end there. The couple is also embroiled in a dispute over their former shared residence.
According to Insider, Costner sought legal intervention to ensure Baumgartner vacated the house by July's end. She, in turn, asked for an extension until August 15 to find suitable accommodation amidst the challenging rental market.
With the apparent animosity surrounding the split, it's likely that even after Baumgartner's departure, lingering emotional repercussions will continue to unfold
