The relentless quest to locate British actor Julian Sands, who vanished in the Southern California mountains, regained momentum on Saturday, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. This latest resurgence of efforts comes months after Sands was first reported missing by his kin on January 13, 2023, in the perilous terrain of the Mount Baldy Bowl area of the San Gabriel Mountains near Los Angeles.
Assisted by two helicopters, a drone crew, and over 80 enthusiastic volunteers, the search teams scoured inaccessible areas on Mount Baldy, hoping to discover the missing 65-year-old actor. Despite their dedication, Sands remains missing.
Unreachable by foot, drones surveyed these remote areas, providing aerial insight that ground search parties couldn't attain.
Harsh Weather Hampers Search
Sands' disappearance coincided with an extreme weather front passing over Mount Baldy, creating harsh conditions characterized by snowfall, ice, and wind.
The Sheriff's Department had previously cautioned about the “adverse and extremely dangerous” conditions. Recent warmer weather has not improved accessibility significantly. "Extreme alpine conditions" continue to make portions of the mountain impassable, while deep ravines and steep terrain concealed beneath over ten feet of ice and snow add to the hurdles faced by rescuers.
Since Sands' disappearance, the Sheriff's Department has initiated eight intensive ground and air search operations, with volunteers investing over 500 hours into the effort. Despite the daunting conditions, the Department asserts that Sands' missing person case remains active, and the search will persist on a limited scale.
The simultaneous disappearance of another hiker, Bob Gregory from Hawthorne, California, underscores the perilousness of the area. Unlike Sands, Gregory's body was discovered in the San Gabriel Mountains in February, as reported by KABC, a Los Angeles-based ABC News station.
Born in England, Sands, who resided in North Hollywood, carved out an illustrious acting career from the 1980s, impressing audiences on both the big screen and television. His noteworthy performances include his role as George Emerson in the 1985 Oscar-winning drama "A Room with a View," opposite Helena Bonham-Carter, as well as roles in "Warlock," "Leaving Las Vegas," and the 1998 rendition of "The Phantom of the Opera."
