In the latest chapter of the high-profile separation of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Pitt has accused his ex-wife of selling her stake in their French winery to enact revenge amidst their ongoing child custody battle.

Broken Agreement, Broken Trust

Documents obtained by international media outlets reveal that the Hollywood power couple had reached an agreement never to sell their shares in Chateau Miraval, the winery they jointly purchased in 2008, without mutual consent.

However, after their divorce in 2019, Jolie allegedly decided to withdraw from the joint venture, triggering buyout negotiations. As Pitt had invested more time and money in the project, he ended up with 68 percent ownership of the property.

Pitt was shocked to discover in 2021, through a press release, that Jolie had surreptitiously sold her share to a Russian businessman he had previously rejected. The actor believes Jolie's actions were not only an attempt to get back at him following a contentious custody decision, but also intentionally damaging to the business they had built together.

In a document filed in LA Superior Court, Pitt's legal team argued, “Her decision to terminate negotiations with Pitt was intentional and pretextual. As will be demonstrated at trial, Jolie’s actions were unlawful, severely and intentionally damaging Pitt and unjustly enriching herself”.

A Bitter Grapes Strategy

What intensifies the controversy is the identity of the man who purchased Jolie's share. The alleged buyer, Yuri Shefler, is a Russian businessman with purported ties to President Vladimir Putin, a connection that could potentially sour the winery's reputation.

Pitt is convinced that Jolie specifically chose Shefler because of his controversial links, knowing it would hurt the winery's image and success. As the court document alleges, “Stoli and Jolie have sought to force Pitt into a partnership with a stranger, and worse yet, a stranger with poisonous associations and intentions”.

It seems this wine-stained dispute is far from over. As the bitter custody battle continues to ferment, the Pitt-Jolie separation appears to have left a bitter aftertaste that extends beyond their personal lives, impacting their joint business interests as well. This story is a stark reminder that, in the world of celebrity divorces, the stakes can be as high as the emotions.
