Reality TV star Khloé Kardashian bravely shared her unique journey of motherhood during a recent episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, sparking conversation around the emotionally complex process of surrogacy.
Kardashian, who recently welcomed her second child via a surrogate, spoke candidly about the unforeseen struggles she faced along the way.
Coming to Terms with Surrogacy
Khloé admitted to being in a "state of shock from the entire experience in general." She detailed her feelings of disconnection during the pregnancy and her initial difficulty in coming to terms with the surrogacy process.
"I buried my head in the sand during that pregnancy," she confessed. However, it was her visit to the hospital that allowed her to fully grasp the reality of her situation. "When I went to the hospital, that was the first time it really registered, and it has nothing to do with the baby," Kardashian explained.
Despite feeling immense joy at the arrival of her new baby, she also expressed guilt at the transactional nature of the surrogacy process. "I felt really guilty that this woman just had my baby, and then I take the baby and then I go to another room and you're separated.
It's such a transactional experience because it's not about him," she said. Kardashian used this platform to advocate for more honest discussions around surrogacy, acknowledging its many benefits while also stressing that it is a very different experience.
"I wish someone was honest about surrogacy and the difference of it," she stated. "That doesn’t mean it's bad — it's great, but it's very different."
Navigating Different Connections
The celebrity mom further shared that she initially felt less connected to her newborn son than she did to her firstborn, True, now 5 years old.
"It's a mindf---," she revealed, comparing her experience to that of her sister, Kim Kardashian, who found the surrogacy process straightforward. "Kim said hers was easy, and this is not easy." Elsewhere, Khloé touched upon her relationship with Tristan Thompson, the father of her two children, and his existing paternal relationships.
Thompson has a 16-month-old son, Theo, with Maralee Nichols, and a 6-year-old son, Prince, with ex-partner Jordan Craig. Earlier this month, Khloé had to ward off rumors suggesting a possible reconciliation with Thompson.
Responding to a speculative Instagram comment, she urged fans to stop pushing this narrative, finding the repeated speculation "exhausting" and "tiring."
