Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth announced their decision to divorce on Friday. The couple, who were approaching their twelfth wedding anniversary, made the announcement on their respective Instagram accounts with a heartfelt statement.
The Couple's Joint Statement
In their joint statement, Witherspoon and Toth expressed their shared commitment to their son and family as they embark on this next chapter. They wrote, "We have some personal news to share...
It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness and mutual respect for everything we have created together." The statement continued, "Our biggest priority is our son and our entire family as we navigate this next chapter.
These matters are never easy and are extremely personal. We truly appreciate everyone's respect for our family's privacy at this time."
An Amicable Split
A source close to the couple has confirmed that the decision to divorce was made amicably and that the two remain the best of friends.
The insider stated, "They really are the best of friends and this is such an amicable decision. They are so committed to co-parenting together. They are invested in their whole family and making this as smooth as possible for everyone." Witherspoon and Toth share a ten-year-old son, Tennessee, and the actress also has two children from her previous marriage to Ryan Phillippe - daughter Ava, 23, and son Deacon, 19.
The Beginning of a Beautiful Relationship
In a 2012 interview with ELLE, Witherspoon fondly recalled her first encounter with Toth, which took place at a friend's house shortly after her breakup with Jake Gyllenhaal. She described Toth as a "really good person" who stepped in to help her avoid an uncomfortable situation with a drunk individual.
Witherspoon stated, "It happened out of the blue. This really drunk guy was hitting on me, making such an idiot of himself, yelling at me. He was, like, [slurring, scowling, pointing finger in her face] 'You don't know me.' And I was like, 'Yeah, I know.
I don't know you!' Jim came over and said, 'Please excuse my friend. He's just broken up with someone.' Jim was a really good friend, pulling him out of that situation. That's just kind of who he is, a really good person." The split of Witherspoon and Toth marks the end of a beautiful love story, but their commitment to co-parenting and mutual respect for one another will undoubtedly ensure a smooth transition for their family.
