In a recent episode of the documentary series "Dear" on Apple TV+, singer and actress Selena Gomez made a candid admission about her struggle with social media criticism. Despite previously stating that she was unaffected by comments about her appearance, the 30-year-old star revealed that the constant barrage of negative comments had a profound impact on her.

The Unfair Reality of Social Media Criticism

Gomez spoke candidly about the pressure she felt to maintain a certain image and how this pressure led her to lie about the impact of social media criticism. She stated, "I was being shamed for gaining weight because of my lupus.

I lied. I would go online, and I would post a picture of myself, and I would say, 'it doesn't matter.' I'm not accepting what you're saying,' all the while being in the room posting that, crying my eyes out, because nobody deserves to hear those things." Despite her efforts to present a brave face to the world, Gomez was struggling with the constant barrage of negative comments and the pressure to maintain a certain image.

She shared, "I was posting these things saying, 'it doesn't bother me,' because I didn't want it to bother other people who are experiencing the same thing: getting shamed for what they look like, who they are, who they love.

I just think it's so unfair. I don't think that anybody deserves to feel less than."

Overcoming Adversity through Strength and Support

Gomez also spoke about her journey with lupus and the kidney transplant she underwent in 2017.

She expressed her gratitude for her friend and donor, Francia, saying, "I will never, ever, ever be more in debt to a person than Francia. The idea of someone not even second-guessing to be a donor was unbelievably overwhelming." She went on to share that she believes everything happens for a reason and that her journey has allowed her to do something for others.

Despite the painful side effects of her chronic illness and the constant criticism she faced, Gomez has continued to push forward and inspire others. She recently appeared at the Golden Globe Awards with her younger sister, where she wore a stunning strapless Valentino dress.
