Will Smith Refuses to Offer Personal Apology to Chris Rock for Oscars Incident

Actor Will Smith has still not extended a personal apology to comedian Chris Rock, despite the latter's recent stand-up special "Selective Outrage" in which Rock once again pokes fun at Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

According to sources close to foreign media, it is unlikely that the two will reconcile.

The Aftermath of the Oscars Incident

In March 2022, Will Smith was involved in a physical altercation at the Oscars ceremony, leading to a temporary ban from the event for the next ten years.

In the aftermath of the incident, Smith issued two apologies via Instagram, one in a written statement the day after the awards ceremony and another in an emotional video in July. Sources close to the actor claim that his apologies were simply an attempt to save his personal reputation and that Rock has moved on from the incident, not expecting an apology.

However, recent sources close to Jada Pinkett Smith have claimed that Rock is obsessed with her according to PageSix. "Will's two public apologies were all about saving his own reputation," a source stated. "Will has not apologized to Chris Rock in person -- and Chris isn't expecting it." "This was closure for Chris," another source said of Rock's stand-up special. "He wanted to do that in a safe space." The source went on to explain that the choice of venue was not because Rock is obsessed with Jada, as previously claimed, but because he feels comfortable in the venue and with the audience.

The Controversy over Jada Pinkett Smith

In his special, Rock also mocked Jada for a situation in 2015 when she asked him not to host the Oscars after Will was not nominated for his role in the movie "Concussion." The source stated, "Back in 2016 she helped start a movement with the Academy Awards by questioning why there are so few Black members, and Chris took it to this?"

The Tension between Rock and Will Smith

As a reminder, it's been almost a year since Will Smith calmly walked across the stage at the Oscars and slapped Rock, after the comedian made a joke about Jada's bald head.

In his special, Rock claimed that Jada deserved to be made fun of, saying, "I did some jokes about her. Who gives a f---? That's how it is: She starts it, I finish it. That's what the f--- happened. Nobody's pickin' on this bitch. She started this s---. Nobody was pickin' on her."
