Zaya's Legal Identity Affirmed: Dwyane Wade Supports Daughter's Transition

The son of former NBA star, Dwayne Wade, has recently decided to transition gender, with the full support of his father. This news comes after the media reported on a court statement made by the retired basketball player.

Custody Battle and Support for Zaya

Dwayne Wade has been the legal custodian of Zaya, now 15 years old, since 2011.

Throughout this journey, the 41-year-old athlete has been a strong advocate for Zaya's right to "live more comfortably and honestly in all aspects of her life." However, the journey has not been without its challenges. Dwayne's ex-wife, Siohvaughn Funches, has accused him of "pressuring" Zaya to transition and "capitalizing on financial opportunities," according to PageSix.

In response to these claims, Dwayne filed a statement in November 2022, calling the accusations "nonsensical." He went on to explain, "While it certainly would have been preferable for Zaya’s mother to be supportive of this important part of Zaya’s journey, Zaya should not be forced to put her life on hold while she waits for Siohvaughn to acknowledge and accept her truth." Dwayne's request to legally affirm Zaya's identity was made after Zaya asked for his support.

The requested amendments would allow Zaya to live more comfortably and honestly, from simple introductions to more significant life decisions such as obtaining a driver's license or filling out college applications.

Dwayne's statement:

He said that "a court order affirming her identity will allow Zaya to live more comfortably and honestly in all aspects of her life - from simple introductions and food orders, to applying for a driver's license and filling out college applications." In his statement, Dwayne emphasized that he and his wife, Gabrielle Union, would never "force Zaya or any of [their] children to do anything against their will, much less force an identity on them." Dwayne and Gabrielle are also the proud parents of 4-year-old daughter Kaavia and 20-year-old son Zaire.

In a world where gender identity is still a controversial topic, it takes a lot of courage for someone to publicly support a loved one's journey. Dwayne Wade's unwavering support for Zaya serves as a shining example of love and acceptance for all families navigating similar journeys.
