Anthony Ciccone, the eldest brother of music icon Madonna, has passed away at the age of 66. The news of his death was confirmed by Joe Henry, husband of Madonna's older sister Melanie Ciccone.

A Tribute to a Complex Character

Joe Henry, who is married to Madonna's sister Melanie Ciccone, took to Instagram to share the news, along with a black and white photo of himself.

In a heartfelt post, he wrote: "My brother-in-law, Anthony Gerard Ciccone, exited this earthly plane last evening. I’ve known him since I was 15, in the spring of our lives in Michigan so many years now gone. As brother Dave Henry (who took this photograph) notes here, Anthony was a complex character; and god knows: we tangled in moments, as true brothers can.

But I loved him, and understood him better than I was sometimes willing to let on. But trouble fades; and family remains— with hands reached across the table. Farewell, then, brother Anthony. I want to think the god your blessed mother (and mine) believed in has her there, waiting to receive you.

At least for today, no one shall dissuade me from this vision."

A Life Marked by Struggles

Anthony Ciccone's long battle with alcoholism was well documented, with reports of him living under a bridge in Michigan for years and his family allegedly stopping to help him making headlines more than a decade ago.

In 2011, Ciccone spoke out against his family, saying: "I'm a zero in their eyes - a non-person. I'm an embarrassment... If I froze to death, my family probably wouldn't know or care about it for six months." However, in 2017, it was reported that he had completed a rehab program and reconnected with his family.

Madonna, who liked Henry's post, has yet to comment on the tragedy. The post's nod to Ciccone's difficulties serves as a reminder that, as Henry wrote, "trouble fades, family remains, with hands reached across the table."
