Family, colleagues, and friends of Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of the late Elvis Presley, gathered at Graceland, the Presley family estate, to mourn her passing and celebrate her life. Lisa Marie, who died ten days ago from a heart attack at the age of 54, was laid to rest in a private ceremony attended by over a thousand people.
A "Celebration of the Life of Lisa Marie Presley"
The event, officially called a "celebration of the life of Lisa Marie Presley," was held at the mansion of her father, Elvis, and featured speeches and performances from those closest to her.
Ben Smith-Petersen, the boyfriend of Riley Keough, Lisa Marie's eldest daughter, read a message on her behalf, in which he announced the couple had just had a daughter and that Elvis Presley would be her great-grandfather.
In the message, Riley said, "Thank you for teaching me that love is the only thing that matters in this life. I hope I can love my daughter like you loved me. Like you loved my brother and sisters. Thank you for giving me strength, heart, empathy, courage, sense of humor, manners, empathy, my wildness, my tenacity.
I am a product of your heart. My sisters are. My brother is. We are you. You are us. My eternal love. I hope you finally know how loved you were here. Thank you for trying so hard with us. And if we didn't tell you daily, thank you."
Famous faces in attendance
Many famous faces came to pay their respects to Lisa Marie, including Austin Butler, the actor who portrayed Elvis Presley in a biographical film, model Kaia Garber, and Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, who sang the song "To Sheila." Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, also gave a short speech, saying, "Sissy this is for you with affection.
My late mother-in-law used to say that nothing can be said can begin to take away the anguish and the pain of these moments because grief is the price we pay for love and how right she was. Today we talk about Lisa-Marie. We look at Priscilla as a mother to Lisa-Marie, we look at Lisa-Marie and say you lost a son.
Mothers losing children, there are no words for it. So today we talk about action." Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose sang "November Rain" as a farewell to Lisa Marie, and musician Alanis Morissette also made an appearance. Lisa Marie was buried in the cemetery at Graceland, where Elvis Presley, his parents Vernon and Gladys, grandmother Minnie Mae, and Lisa's only son Benjamin Keough are also buried.
